Keeping Outdoor Ceremonies Safe, Comfortable and Enjoyable
As a celebrant, my most important responsibility is to help create a ceremony that feels meaningful, relaxed and memorable. But alongside that, I also have a duty of care to my clients and to everyone attending the ceremony.
That duty of care is sometimes shared with others, such as the venue owner, wedding coordinator or venue stylist. Each person has their own area of responsibility, but we all have the same overall aim: to make sure the ceremony is safe, well planned and enjoyable for everyone present.
Thinking About Risk Before the Ceremony
Part of my role is to make sure that nothing I do adds unnecessary risk. For example, if a couple would like a candle ceremony as part of their wedding, I need to be confident that the candles are secure once lit and that there are no flammable items nearby that could catch fire.
This is especially important outdoors, where wind can cause decorations, fabric or foliage to move unexpectedly. A beautiful ceremony feature should never become a safety concern.
Why Every Outdoor Ceremony Needs a Plan B
Everyone loves the idea of an outdoor event during the summer months, but in the UK, we can never be completely sure what the weather will do. This is particularly true for weddings, where arrangements are often made many months, or even years, in advance.
When I talk to couples who are planning an outdoor wedding ceremony, I always encourage them to have a clear Plan B. Usually, that means identifying an indoor space that can be used if the weather turns wet or windy.
Planning for Heat as Well as Rain
The recent weather has been a useful reminder that it is not only rain and high winds we need to think about. Extreme heat can also affect the comfort and safety of everyone attending a ceremony.
This can add another layer of complication. The indoor space chosen as a wet-weather alternative may not always be cooler or more comfortable than the outdoor setting. In some cases, it could even feel hotter.
Questions Worth Asking Before the Day
When choosing a ceremony location, it is worth thinking carefully about comfort as well as appearance. For example:
- Is there shade at the outdoor location?
- Is the indoor alternative air conditioned?
- If not, are fans available?
- Can windows be opened safely?
- Can blinds or curtains be kept closed from early morning to help keep the room cooler?
- Is water easily available for guests?
These details may seem small during the planning stage, but they can make a big difference on the day itself.
Enjoyment and Safety Go Hand in Hand
For me, the two most important things when planning any ceremony are simple: everyone should enjoy the occasion, and everyone should stay safe. Thoughtful preparation helps make both possible.
